Yumthang Valley (3,564 m) in North Sikkim, 24 km north of Lachung, is one of India's most spectacular alpine meadows. From April to June, 24 species of rhododendrons bloom simultaneously across the valley floor, while the Teesta River runs through its centre and natural hot springs bubble at its edge — earning it the title "Valley of Flowers of Sikkim."

A Glimpse into the History of Yumthang Valley
Ancient Pastureland
Yumthang was historically a high-altitude summer grazing ground for the Bhutia yak herders of Lachung. "Yumthang" means "meadow of sickness" in Bhutia — a reference to the intense cold that could afflict herders and livestock during harsh winters. Seasonal herdsmen's shelters (yersa) dotted the valley floor for centuries.
Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary
The Government of Sikkim declared Yumthang the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary in 1984, protecting its extraordinary concentration of Rhododendron species — the highest diversity of any single alpine zone in Eastern Himalaya. The sanctuary encompasses 43 sq km of alpine meadow, scrub, and high-altitude forest.
Tourism Access (1990s)
The road from Lachung to Yumthang was completed in the 1990s after North Sikkim opened to permitted tourism. The natural hot springs (Yumthang Hot Springs) near the valley entrance became a major additional attraction, drawing visitors year-round for their reputed therapeutic mineral content.
Significance of Yumthang Valley
Yumthang hosts 24 of Sikkim's 36 recorded rhododendron species — blooming simultaneously between April and June in a cascade of red, pink, white, and purple. It also serves as the last major stop before Zero Point (Yumesamdong, 4,428 m) — the highest tourist-accessible point in Sikkim. The Yumthang River hot springs, rich in sulphur and iron, are believed to have healing properties by local Bhutia communities.
Events at Yumthang Valley
Rhododendron Festival (May)
Each May during peak bloom, Sikkim Tourism organises guided nature walks and photography tours through Yumthang's carpet of rhododendrons. Cultural performances from Lachung's Bhutia community — including folk dances and traditional music — are staged in the valley, drawing visitors from across India.
Saga Dawa (Full Moon of Vaisakha)
On Saga Dawa — the holiest day in the Tibetan Buddhist calendar — Lachung monks and villagers make a pilgrimage through Yumthang valley offering prayers along the Teesta River bank. The procession winds between prayer flags planted by herders, creating one of North Sikkim's most atmospheric religious observances.
Did You Know?
The Yumthang Hot Springs reach 50 °C year-round — hot enough to boil an egg — and remain unfrozen even when the surrounding valley is buried in snow. Local Bhutia folklore holds that bathing in the springs on the morning of Losar brings immunity from illness for a full year. The springs are maintained by the government as a free public facility accessible to all visitors.
